Innovative process engineering system based on sustainable indicators

ESTECO, in collaboration with other 7 European companies, has developed a novel eco-process engineering system based on sustainable indicators and cloud computing (EPES) that allows industrial companies to optimize their processes and improve their sustainable performance.

Traditional maintenance systems only focus on replacing worn out parts without a knowledgeable analysis of the upgrading possibilities that may arise from the concepts of sustainable development. Just to improve that, an eco-process engineering system has been developed by EPES Consortium, which arrives to the market to improve the performance of highly customized industrial product, processes and services during their life cycle.

The improvement brought on by the EPES solution is to offer an integrated and consistent set of ICT tools together with a methodology and working handbook that enable the manufacturing companies to offer a common interface for controlling their processes, through a customizable view of the services running in the background. These services are able to quicly react to the global market challenges bearing in mind the clients' requirements and the compliance with the increasingly demanding sectorial regulations and environmental constraints.

The EPES approach and ICT tools prototypes were tested by three application scenarios in the areas of windmill engineering (at TAMOIN), high voltage cable production and monitoring (at nkt-Cables), and aircraft design and manufacturing (at AIRBUS).

"By applying EPES solution, TAMOIN improves the scheduling of all their maintenance activities taking into account the current status of the wind turbines, wind forecasts and available resources. As a consequence, TAMOIN optimizes the generation of green energy"

"By applying EPES solution, NKT benefits are the reduction of the quantity of raw and auxiliary materials as well as the reduction of energy consumption in machinery and installations, which implies a cost reduction for the customer"

"By implementing EPES solution, decisions made concerning the design of new wing designs or a new  factory are made in a virtual collaborative environment, where ECO key performance indicators such as CO2 emissions and material usage are now considered"
